Thelonious Bar is a jazz bar that introduces the history of prohibition, bars, and saloons, as well as the birth of jazz. This bar is powered by another jazz bar in Berlin called the Hat bar which is also a jazz bar with live music and jam sessions. while the hat bar focuses on the music this bar is targeted at those who want to experience a calmer environment and enjoy drinks designed based on the concept and history of prohibition and jazz.

Ideation

Thelonious Monk

Named after the renowned jazz pianist-composer Thelonious Monk, Thelonious Bar takes inspiration from the synergy that music and bar culture share since the start of the 20th century.

The era was one of the most progressive periods in American history; from the African-American communities of New Orleans to the secret speakeasy bars in New York City.

Jazz music and the Golden Age of cocktails witnessed political movements, the Prohibition era, the rise of gangsters and crime mobs, illegal alcohol production and the first fight for women’s rights.

But the era also paved the way to famous bartenders and their cocktails, and prominent musicians like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Thelonious Monk.

The menu is a collection of cocktails that reflect this era with an expression similar to Monk’s musical vision, which was ahead of its time and deeply rooted in tradition.

I designed and illustrated this menu making sure not to sacrifice either the storytelling or the efficiency and readability.

One of the main issues was distinguishing the story from the drinks, which I managed by providing distinct visual cues and a guiding symbol underneath every page introduced at the beginning of the menu.
As requested by the client, I kept a cohesive and authentic style of illustration and design throughout the 30+ pages.

I designed a flow to take the reader from mid 1800s to the current day.
Using the simple page flip to introduce "behind the door of a speakeasy and the interior" is an example of this storytelling flow.
